5.5 Sniffs Review: GOING DOWN IN FLAMES by Chris Cannon #Giveaway

Title: Going Down in Flames
Author: Chris Cannon
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance
Publisher: Entangled Teen
ASIN: B00KP8AGRE
Release Date: June 30, 2014
Source: NetGalley ☆ YA Bound Book Tours ☆ Tour Schedule

If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.

Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can't have.

GOING DOWN IN FLAMES has become one of my favorite books so far this year! I absolutely loved the story and the characters are so much fun to read about. Bryn is a no nonsense kind of girl, she doesn't take crap from no one. And Zavien was a real surprise. When you first meet him, he seems kind of like a creep, but as we (and Bryn) get to know him, he's really caring and protective. All the characters have their own unique personalities and qualities. This whole book just left me with a smile on my face while I has reading and after. I was so drawn in that when I reached the end of the book I was surprised and kind of sad that the story was over (for now). I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in this amazing new series!

We were out of snowballs, so we had to go back to our piles to restock. Then we were all back on the field, colliding in a flurry of white. I hit Destiny right above her ear with a huge snowball. She shrieked a feminine war cry and clobbered me with two snowballs, one on either side of my face. My cheeks stung with the cold, and I ran back to the fort to get more snowballs.

As I was reaching down behind the shed to restock my supply of ammo, Destiny barreled into me, knocking me off balance. Her arms wrapped around me, and we fell into the snow on my side. I struggled to break free, but she had me pinned at a strange angle. Technically, I could have thrown her off at any time, but that would have ruined the fun.

I howled as she shoved snow down the back of my shirt, and we rolled several times down the slope as I struggled to get free. But her arms were locked around my neck. And then, somehow, she was pinned under me. Every vein in my body was on fire as I gazed into her crystal clear blue eyes. She released her arms from her vicelike hold on my neck, and her eyes grew wide and her lips parted slightly as though she’d just realized how close our faces were.

I had no idea what possessed me to do it, or when all reason had suddenly flown from my mind, but as I leaned forward and kissed her tenderly, all I could think about was how beautiful and pure she’d looked lying there in the snow with her hair splayed all around her in wild waves of perfection.

Honestly, if I’d stopped to think about what I was about to do, I never would have been able to go through with it. I mean, come on, how many years had I imagined what it would be like to kiss Destiny Clark? But that had always been pure fantasy. Especially after her nasty breakup. If I’d taken the time to consider kissing her, I would’ve convinced myself that the last thing she’d wanted was a kiss.

5.5 Sniffs Review: FIRE OF STARS AND DRAGONS by Melissa Petreshock #Giveaway

Title: Fire of Stars and Dragons
Series: Stars and Souls Trilogy #1
Genre: New Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance
Publisher: Swoon Romance
ASIN: B00ILMKZEU
Release Date: April 29, 2014

Following the death of her vampire uncle, twenty-one-year-old CAITRIONA HAYDEN finds herself in the midst of a trio of quintessential alpha male suitors in 22nd century sovereign America where human females should be seen and not heard.

Theo Pendragon claims her as his ward, ordained to guard her through to a long-awaited destiny unbeknownst to Cait, but finds more than he expected when passion ignites within the dragon for the first time. Always drawn to the pursuit of knowledge rather than the heat of desire, powerful demigod Dante cannot deny everything his future holds in Caitriona. America's monarch, ancient vampire Corrin, has no interest in the frivolity of love, yet marrying Cait could be the answer to his continued survival.

Soon, Cait goes from studying for college exams to choosing a husband in seven days, knowing the consequences are eternal, the love undying, and the bond timeless.

Cait's vampire uncle just died three months ago, leaving everything to her. But she's an unmarried woman, and in 22nd century sovereign America, their rights are limited. So she goes before the American monarch to petition for a pardon to the female dependent laws. This is refused ans she is forced to choose a husband within seven days. Those vying for her affection are: Theo, a dragon of the House of Pendragon; Dante, a demigod, son of the Mother Goddess; and Corrin, a vampire, king of America. Who will she choose?

FIRE OF STARS AND DRAGONS is a story about finding your destiny and the love of a lifetime. Cait has a far greater destiny than just being the ward of a dragon and potential wife to one of three powerful men. We learn that she's currently in transition from mortal to eternal, and she's the dragon's North Star. I was drawn in by the mystery of what Cait's destiny is. What is really her role? What is the North Star to the dragons?

It's all very interesting, and then there is the love square add to the mix. I loved both Theo and Dante, but I was rooting for Cait to choose Theo the whole time. Ever since the beginning when their ward bond was initiated I wanted Theo and Cait to end up together.

I am really looking forward to reading more in the Stars and Souls Trilogy. I want the next book right now!

Cait: 21 year old college student and the heiress to her vampire uncle's estate and wealth. Archaic laws in sovereign America prevent her from coming into her inheritance until she is 30 years old. She is basically forced to choose a husband or risk losing all of it to the Neglected Dependent Services. She has been given seven days to choose between Theo, Dante, and Corrin. Along the way, she learns about a far greater destiny awaiting her. She is also Theo's ward.

Theo: Second Brother of the House of Pendragon. One of the four elite dragon brothers of the King's Guard. This alliance changes when he meets Cait and realizes that she is his ward. But the bond is so much stronger than any other that he's experienced, and he feels things that no other dragon has before. He is the first dragon to ever fall in love.

Dante: He is the son of the Mother Goddess, a demigod who preferred the pursuit of knowledge over the pursuit of the heart. But meeting Cait and learning what he could possibly have with her, changes his perspective. Cait is the only woman Dante has ever loved, and he vows to protect her at any cost. He is the creator of the vampires, and is Corrin's grandfather.

Corrin: King of Sovereign America. He is suffering from Mating sickness. If he does not choose a wife soon, he is going to die. He is very arrogant and egotistical, and the rubs a lot of people the wrong way, particularly Cait, Theo, and Dante. He is Theo's brother Oliver's ward.

The Dragons: Oliver, Liam, Clifford, Claaron, and Jai are all dragons of the Dracopraesi. Oliver, Liam, and Clifford are Theo's brothers from the House of Pendragon. Claaron is from the House of Graywyne, and Jaiteru is from the House of Faerwyng. They are all drawn to Cait as she is their North Star. Each (except Oliver) swear their eternal loyalty to her.

The villain in FIRE OF STARS AND DRAGONS is a elfin warlord-turned-politician, named Z Von Yalfayr, who is also the minister of defense for Sovereign America. He approaches Corrin about the dragons flocking to Cait, and besically wants to wipe them all out, claiming that they are a threat to Corrin's rule as king. He has pretty much gone behind Corrin's back and declared war on Cait the the Dracopraesi with her. The Elves hate the dragons with a passion and Z sees this as an opportunity for revenge.

In FIRE OF STARS AND DRAGONS, Cait has to choose Theo, Dante, or Corrin for her husband. Each vies for her affections in their own ways and for their own reasons.

Theo wants to protect her (she is his ward afterall), but he also feels emotions that he, as a dragon, has never felt before. The ward bond is stronger than any other he has had, and he is the first dragon ever to fall in love. This, in my opinion, makes his love for Cait pure in all definitions of the word.

Dante had been called in by Theo concerning his new ward that he foresaw. He didn't expect to fall in love with Cait, when all he'd ever been interested in was the pursuit of knowledge. But something about Cait opens his heart, and because she is the first woman he has ever loved, I believe his feelings for Cait are pure as well.

But then we come to Corrin. He is slowly dying from Mating sickness and needs to take a wife before that can happen. I never felt that his intentions and supposed affections for Cait were pure. I thought that he was way too selfish and self-centered to really love her at all.

I'm not going to say who she chose, but I will say that the whole time I was reading, from beginning to end, I really wanted her to choose Theo (although I did like Dante quite a bit too). Just not Corrin.

5.5 Sniffs Review: COWBOYS & KISSES by Sasha Summers #Giveaway #Excerpt

Title: Cowboys & Kisses
Series: Teens of Black Falls, Texas #1
Author: Sasha Summers
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Inkspell Publishing
ASIN: B00IDVR40W
Release Date: February 11, 2014
Links: Goodreads ☆ Amazon ☆ Barnes and Noble ☆ Kobo ☆ ARe

Allie had big plans for the future. Falling for a cowboy wasn't part of it.

1. Get out of Black Falls Texas - aka Redneck Hell
(Graduation was eight months away. After that, she was out of there.)

2. Avoid Wyatt Holcomb at all costs.
(Except he was everywhere and kind of hard to ignore since he was hot-and a really nice guy.)

3. Avoid her parents.
(Shouldn't be too hard to do since her father hated her and her mother pretended nothing was wrong.)

4. Stop thinking about Wyatt.
(Which would be a lot easier if he wasn't so sweet... and he'd keep his shirt on.)

5. Decide what she really wants.
(Instead of holding onto the past and the guilt.)

Allie Cooper's family moves to Black Falls, Texas after an accident that killed her best friend. She's angry, disconnected from her family (except her twin brother Dax) and absolutely hates having to move to this hick town. Then she meets Wyatt Holcomb, a very hot cowboy, with his own share of heartache. She tries to resist how she feels for him, but he's slowly changing her, bringing her back to who she used to be. She's reconnecting with her parents, slowly letting go of her pain and grief, and Black Falls isn't turning out so bad with Wyatt around all the time.

As Allie works through her pain she realizes just how much she hurt her family with her self-absorption and hateful words, and comes to realize just how lucky she is once she learns about Wyatt's family. And when she is finally able to open her heart to those around her, she is given a love she never thought possible.

I abso-freaking-lutely loved COWBOYS & KISSES! I don't really know what to say, I loved this story so much. I think I'll just leave it at this:

COWBOYS & KISSES was an intense story that kept my riveted. The relationships between the characters were realistic and you could relate to them on a personal level. And I want my own cowboy after reading this book. I am just so excited and eagerly awaiting the next book in the Black Falls, Texas series!

The Guy: Wyatt Holcomb is a truly good and nice guy. He's genuine. His family suffered a tragedy that tore them apart, and now Wyatt is basically on his own. He works hard to support himself, while still going to school and participating in the rodeo. And he's really good as a rodeo cowboy, he even has college scouts interested in him. He plans on becoming a large animal veterinarian. But something was missing from his life. While he has great friends and a promising future, he didn't feel like he had a real home until he met Allie.

Oh my goodness, Wyatt is just an all-around amazing guy. I don't know how anyone could not fall hard and fast for him. Not only is he a gorgeous guy on the outside, but he's a beautiful person on the inside too.

The Girl: Allie Cooper hides her pain, grief, and guilt over her best friends death behind a mask of anger. She blames herself for her friends death and can't move on without feeling like she's betraying her. Moving to Black Falls just makes her even more angry and she uses that anger to lash out at the people around her. The only person who is able to see behind her angry mask is Wyatt and that unnerves her. With things changing Allie realizes that she need to find what she really wants for her future.

Allie makes a dramatic change in COWBOYS & KISSES. She comes into Black Falls as an angry and bitter person, but quickly starts realizing how she's been acting and treating people, and that it's not right. Wyatt has a positive influence on her and once she opens her heart again, she's a very different person.

The romance in COWBOYS & KISSES was slow building and intense. From the very first time Allie and Wyatt met there was a palpable atmosphere between them.

Of course, in the beginning Allie is still this bitter and mean person, and she pushes Wyatt and her growing feelings for him away. But it's not so easy when he's at her house every day helping to fixing things and walking around with his shirt off. And then when she sees how genuine and sincere he is, her walls slowly start crumbling and she begins letting her guard down around him.

Then there's Wyatt with his lonely family (or maybe I should say non-family) life. He's always working and trying to make a better life for himself. But he also understands the pain that Allie is going through and he wants to be there for her. And then there is his father ordering him to stay away from her.

And in between all of this life drama is the intense stares, gentle comforts, and love-filled kisses. It's a build up of passion and love so powerful it could set the dry Texas land on fire. I seriously thought I'd need a fan. This is one of the most passionate young adult romances I think I've ever read.

“I don’t feel right leaving you here alone.” His voice had an edge to it.

I paused, trying to think of the right words. “I’m not your problem.”

He smiled, his brows going up. “You’re nobody’s problem.”

“My parents would argue with that, but that’s not what I meant and you know—”

He stood up suddenly. “You’re not my problem.” He crossed to me. “But…Allie, I want you to be.”

I really like the sound of that. Which hurt. I’m the last thing you need.

As hard as it was to breathe, I managed to argue. “No, you really don’t.” I sidestepped him, needing distance to keep fighting. “I’m one of those damaged goods on the quick-sale table at the grocery store. Pretty packaging makes you curious, interested, but then you get it home and open it up and realize you wasted your time and money on trash.” I walked out of the kitchen as I spoke. More distance.

His hand caught my arm. “Jesus, Allie, that’s harsh.”

I very carefully pulled my arm out of his hold. “Sometimes the truth is. My best friend taught me that.”

5.5 Sniffs Review: UNTIL LILLY by Aurora Rose Reynolds #Giveaway #Excerpt

Title: Until Lilly
Series: Until #3
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary, Erotica, Romance
Publisher: Aurora Rose Reynolds
ASIN: B00IPRNJ6W
Release Date: February 27, 2014
When Cash Mayson was forced to choose between the love of his life and his unborn child, he knew exactly what he had to do. No matter how broken it left him.

When Lilly Donovan was forced to accept that the guy she loved wasn’t who she thought he was and became a single mother, she knew exactly what she had to do. Proving just how strong she was.

What happens when years later you find out that everything you thought you knew was a lie?

Can two people who once loved each other overcome the obstacles that are thrown at them and fall in love all over again?

Cash Mayson had forgotten how it felt to be loved Until Lilly came back into his life. And now that he remembers, he will do everything within his power to keep not only the woman that he loves, but also his children.

The power of love is a beautiful thing.

UNTIL LILLY takes place four years after the events in Until Trevor, when Cash broke up with Lilly because Jules got pregnant and threatened to abort the child if he didn't do as she said. Cash now has a healthy and energetic son named Jax, he's divorced from Jules, and only sees her when he has to. He still grieves over not being able to be with Lilly, but he doesn't regret what he had to do to protect his son. Then one day when he takes Jax to Jumping Bean, he sees a flash of red hair. Lilly is there with her daughter, Ashlyn, who bears a striking resemblance to Jax, so much so that they could be twins. It's then that Cash realizes that he has a daughter, and that Lilly kept her from him. But he couldn't be more wrong. Thus begins Cash and Lilly's journey back into each other's hearts and the joining of their family.

I'm going to say this right away, UNTIL LILLY was really heartbreaking, but it also showed the strength of true love and family. Cash and Lilly were torn apart by circumstances beyond their control, but fate had other plans. I truly believe that if you're meant to be with someone, you will be. It may not happen when you want it to or in the way that you want it to, but you will eventually be brought together. And that was shown in UNTIL LILLY. It has taken Cash and Lilly four years to reconnect. They both had their share of heartache, but their children also brought them joy. So while this story is heartbreaking and even has some darkness to it, it's also really beautiful. This is probably my favorite book in the Until series so far.

The Guy: Cash Mayson was just enjoying life and the ladies he was with, until he met Lilly and she became the only woman he wanted to be with. But one woman that he had a past fling with, Jules, had plans to get pregnant by one of the Mayson men, and Cash ended up being the one she chose. To protect his unborn son, he broke it off with the only woman he ever loved, breaking both their hearts. But he doesn't regret that he now has his son Jax. But his life is still stained with the pain and suffering that Jules still continues to inflict on both Cash and Jax. The only thing that brings happiness, besides his son, is Lilly reentering his life, with their daughter, Ashlyn.

The Girl: Lilly Donovan had never been with a man until Cash, and he's the only man she's ever been with. She quickly fell in love with him, but after Cash returned home one weekend, he suddenly broke up with her. Then she became pregnant after only one time with him. After confirming her pregnancy, she contacted Cash only to be told to get rid of it. This plunged her into a depression, but determined to keep her baby, she gave birth, then went home to Alaska to live with her parents. When she is offered a teaching job in Tennessee, she moves back to the south with her daughter Ashlyn. She never expected to see Cash again, let alone love him again.

Both Cash and Lilly have matured a great deal in UNTIL LILLY. You can really see a difference between how they were in Until Trevor and how they are now. Going through what they did and having children made them grow up faster than they probably would have otherwise.

The villain, without a doubt, is Jules. She somehow tampered with the condoms that Cash used when he was with her to make herself pregnant by him. Then she threatens to abort the baby if Cash doesn't do as she says. Then when Jax is born, she doesn't treat him like a mother should, and Cash basically raised him himself. Even after the divorce, Jules causes Cash and Jax pain.

Then when Lilly comes back into Cash's life, with their daughter, Jules does whatever she can to discredit Lilly's character and even threatens Ashlyn.

This woman is downright evil. I don't know what it is that she really wanted by doing all this, but she has caused the entire Mayson family nothing but pain and suffering. And the full extent of what she has done is just mind-boggling.

If the romance between Cash and Lilly doesn't make you believe that some people are just meant to be, I don't know what will. These two were torn apart by an evil woman, raised their children on their own (with the help of their families), and endured great heartache. And though it is four years later, they were brought back together, and the love that they had quickly comes back alive.

Lilly is the exact kind of woman that Cash (and Jax) need in their lives after having to endure the poison of Jules for so long. Lilly is loving, cheerful, and nurturing. She is a devoted mother and would do anything for her daughter. She shows Jax the love a mother is supposed to show her children, and that is something that he doesn't get from Jules.

Cash is in many ways a broken man after what Jules did to him, and Lilly's love for not only him, but his son as well, slowly heal him, and bring back the man that he was before.

This romance just really touched my heart, in many ways.

“Is that what you do? I mean do you often try to hit on women in coffee shops by buying coffee for them?”

“I can tell you with one hundred percent truthfulness that I have never done that before.”

“Never.” A look passes over his face I don’t know what It means but I don’t like it.

“Do you date a lot?” I ask quietly wondering if he thinks I will be some kind of conquest.

“I haven’t dated.”

“You haven’t dated?” I look him over again he must think I am stupid guys who look like him must date a lot.

“I have never had to date.”

“What does that mean?”

“If I want to sleep with someone I don’t need to date them.”

“What?” I breathe that is not at all what I expected him to say. “You’re the guy that can get any girl he wants without ever putting any kind of effort into it.” He shrugs the gesture making me feel sick at the same time I want to kick him in the nuts. Maybe the red hair does make me have a temper.

“I never lead anyone on or tell them things they want to hear.”

“So that makes it okay?”

“I don’t know if it makes it okay but it’s who I am.”

“Well I am glad that this is coming to light now rather than later.”

“Oh no,” He shakes his head. “This thing with you is something completely different.”

“Yeah I know.” I tell him crossing my arms over my chest. “Its different because I will not be sleeping with you.” I lean forward. “EVER.”

“Well I guess we answered the question about red heads and their tempers didn’t we.” He smiles showing off both dimples. “But trust me when I tell you I would not have driven almost three hours to sleep with you that’s not what I am looking for.”
