Quick Sniff Review: RED & WOLFE - PART ONE by Ella James

Title: Red & Wolfe - Part 1
Series: Red & Wolfe #1
Author: Ella James
Genre: Adult, Erotica, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Barkley's Books
ASIN: B00K90J2MI
Release Date: May 9, 2014
Source: Mark My Words Publicity
Links: Goodreads  ☆ Amazon

When Sarah "Red" Ryder loses her job as an art critic for a Boston newspaper, she's brokenhearted. Worse than that? She's broke. Her boyfriend recently left her, so she's stuck paying her hefty apartment rent alone. After two months unemployed, there's no money left. With no immediate family to turn to, Red reaches out to her estranged grandmother, a reclusive writer living on an island off the coast of Charleston. Several days later, Red receives $30,000 and an invitation to visit.

James Wolfe is not Red's grandmother - but he's the only person waiting for her at the boat dock. Red has something he needs. He won't take "no" for an answer, and he doesn't mind screwing her over to get it. He lost his conscience six years ago, when he went off the grid. Since then, life is about him - and the renowned oil paintings he does under the mysterious pseudonym "W."

Until the moment he sees her. Then Red is all he wants. And Wolfe will have her - any way he can.

Red has just lost her job and her funds are rapidly depleting. She has wanted to contact her grandmother ever since her mother's death, but has put it off because of their estrangement. It isn't until she's at the point where she has no ther choice that she send her grandmother an email. There is no answer until one day 30,000 dollars shows up in her bank account and an email simply saying "Come." But when she arrives at Rabbit Island, she's met by a man named Race, who claims to be her grandmother's assistant, and he brings bad news. He also has his own agenda with Red's visit. RED & WOLFE: PART ONE is the beginning of a serial series retelling the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

My favorite part was the mystery behind Wolfe. There are so many different parts to who he is. I'm really looking forward to learning more about him. I didn't like how most of the story was about Red and her unfortunate events. I felt that it made the story slower than it could have been. I'm sure that if the book was read as a whole instead of part it would be okay. But when the story is separated into parts like this one is, it makes it feel like slow going. Even though Red and Wolfe dislike each other from the start, there is an attraction that is undeniable. I'm really looking forward to seeing where things go between these two, now that they are on Rabbit Island.

Quick Sniff Review: LOVE, LEX by Avery Aster

Title: Love, Lex
Series: The Undergrad Years #1
Author: Avery Aster
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Erotica
Publisher: Avery Aster
ASIN: B00JK1ZABE
Release Date: April 7, 2014

This summer, I'd planned to celebrate my eighteenth birthday in Europe with my fellow Manhattanites--Taddy Brill, Blake Morgan, and Vive Farnworth--until I caught my boyfriend screwing my mother. According to the police report, this vomit-inducing incident happened around the same time I'd supposedly blown-up my mother's penthouse. Like I'm walking around Soho with a stick of dynamite in my Louis Vuitton purse--not! Now, my besties and I are in jail.

Officer Ford Gotti, the Harley-wheelin' biker cop who arrested us, keeps sticking his perfectly-sculpted nose into my case. His inked body is jacked like a superhero, and he says I can trust him. He wants me to fess up. I won't. Not again. Why should I? My friends and I had a previous stint in juvie that nearly destroyed us. I gotta protect them and keep my mouth shut. Right? --Lex Easton, women's studies major, motorcycle enthusiast, and virgin.

From the NYT Bestselling author of The Manhattanites series comes another hilariously sexy novel featuring young, rich, beautiful people doing stupid cray-cray things. If you enjoy TV shows like Gossip Girl, The Carrie Diaries, and The Girls on HBO--then Love, Lex is the book for you!

The Undergrad Years is a New Adult contemporary miniseries about first loves, independence, and everlasting friendships.

LOVE, LEX is the first book in a mini-series, The Undergrad Years, that takes place 10 years before the events in the Manhattanites series. Lex Easton is looking forward to her 18th birthday, she's going to Paris with her best friends and plans to lose her virginity to her boyfriend. But that all changes when she ends up in jail, accused to trying to blow her mother up in an explosion that destroyed their penthouse. The one good thing to come from all of this? The sexy motorcycle cop, Ford Alessandro-Vollero-Gotti.

This was a really fun book to read! I loved Lex's best friends - Vive, Taddy, Their interactions are pretty funny, but you can also see their strong bond. I really want to know more about the event that first put them in juvie. Lex's parent are also totally outrageous! Ford, the motorcycle cop, is muscled and tattooed, but he also seems to have an alterior motive. All I'll say about what happens between him and Lex is that there is a really HOT scene between them. So I thought that this was a really great start to this mini-series within the Manhattanites world.

3 Sniffs Review: JELLYBEAN KISSES by Amy Evans

First love is the sweetest....

Jax and Jacey are everyone's favorite couple, even though they've barely ever kissed.

In kindergarten, Jax pulled out a chair for Jacey and swept the play dough off so that she would sit down next to him and he's been carving out ways for them to stick together ever since. Though everyone in their conservative, small beach town sees them as a couple, they're not, exactly. Because while they both want more, they've agreed to wait.

Jacey works hard, respects her elders and follows every spoken and silent rule about fitting in and doing the ‘right’ thing. She doesn't dare give the gossips more fodder from her family, so she's kept Jax firmly in the friendzone. It takes a hurricane for her to realize timing is everything, but months later she’s still too afraid to put her heart on the line and tell him how she feels. Then plans change – hers for summer and his for college, and Jacey needs to make the most of the time she and Jax have left, or stay stuck in the land of missed beginnings forever.

JELLYBEAN KISSES is the story of Jacey and Jax, and their first love for each other. This first book tells us Jacey's side of the story. How she denied herself the one thing she wanted most - meaning Jax - because every time they tried to be together something bad happened, and she felt it was a punishment. By the end of her ruminations, Jacey decides that it's time to let herself have what she's denied herself for years. She asks Jax if they can be together properly, now that she's made peace with the fact that none of the bad things that happened after they were together, happened because they were together.

This book is actually the first part of a serial series, so it's pretty short. To be honest, that's the only thing that I didn't like about JELLYBEAN KISSES. It just felt like there wasn't enough to this first book to be fulfilling. I'm sure that if I read the entire story as one book, I would have enjoyed it more.

My favorite part of the story was the "RED" chapter, where the jellybean kisses come in. This is probably the most emotional chapter is the entire book. I hope that there are more chapters like this one in future parts of this serial.

The Guy: Jax has been Jacey's best friend since they were little kids and that turned into something more as they got older. Jacey makes him believe on numerous occasions that they are finally going to be together, but then something happens to make her push him away. But for years, he pretended to be her boyfriend to keep the gossips at bay. Even now that they are on their way to college, he's holding out hope that Jacey will give them a chance.

The Girl: After Jacey's first kiss with Jax, she learns that her older sister is pregnant. This leads her to believe that kissing Jax caused this bad thing to happen. She soon gains the nickname "Ice Queen." She became very religious after that and is very strict in her beliefs about marriage and sex. It takes Jax helping her remove a goose from her car to kiss him after so long. But it's learning that her college plans have been delayed that leads her to thinking about her relationship with Jax and all the things that have happened between them.

Jacey and Jax's strange relationship started on the 4th of July, the summer before their Freshman year. They both notice how the other has matured - Jax has gained more muscle, while Jacey came into her curves. They shared their first kiss under the fishing pier, with the fireworks going off in the sky.

It sounds like a beautiful moment, and it was until Jacey got home to learn that her sister was pregnant and being kick out of the house. These two events became connected in Jacey's mind, and to prevent the same thing from happening to her, she became an "Ice Queen," pushing Jax away.

Each chapter of a past event between Jacey and Jax shows them taking a step toward a relationship, then something bad happening and Jacey pushing Jax away. It's a wonder that he didn't just give up totally on being with her. Although he did see someone for a short time during Homecoming their Senior year. Ironically, it takes something bad to happen for her to really think about her feelings for Jax and decide that maybe now is the time to just go for it with him.

3 Sniffs Review: CRYING WOLF by Amanda Kay #Excerpt

Title: Crying Wolf
Series: The Hunter Jackson Tales #1
Author: Amanda Kay
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Supernatural, Military
Publisher: Bayou Brew Publishing
ASIN: B00IRRE004
Release Date: March 3, 2014

War is reality...
Love is hard to come by...
The two worlds should never collide.

Hunter Jackson has been a major force in the werewolf army since he turned eighteen. When he hit twenty-one his father the commanding of-ficer of the entire force gave him complete control over his own unit. Their mission is simple take down the shape shifters.

There is one problem with this...
Her name is Amelia.

Two months before his team raids the home of the Shape Shifter heads he meets Amelia Brecken. She is like no one else he has ever known; she also is the daughter of Sir Reid and Mistress Lilyann leaders of the Shape Shifters.

War becomes his reality and love takes a backseat. A collision course is paved and only Hunter can prevent the accident. Danger is real. Her protection is key, even if he has to break her heart to keep her safe.

The Werewolves and Shape Shifters are at war. Hunter Jackson, General of the Werewolf Army, makes one final try for peace between the two peoples. While the Shape Shifters are all for peace, his father, the Commander, will never allow that to happen.

Amid the chaos of war, Hunter meets Amelia, and quickly falls in love with her. But when he learns that she is a Brecken, and the most powerful Shape Shifter ever in existence, his hopes of a relationship are dashed. That is until she agrees to one date with him. But that one date changes everything for them both.

CRYING WOLF is your classic Romeo and Juliet type story. You have the two rival families, in this case the Jacksons and the Breckens, and two star-crossed lovers from each family risking everything to be together.

I really enjoyed this story and I'm really looking forward to the next book, especially with how this one ended. The only thing I had a problem with was some formatting issues, but that didn't stop me from reading and enjoying this read.

The Guy: Hunter Jackson is the General of the Werewolf Army, but unlike his father the Commander, he knows that peace can be achieved between them and the Shape Shifters. Hunter and his best friends, Luke, are both really different from most of the others in the Army. They both want peace with the Shape Shifters, and they both have relationships with a Shape Shifter, while most of the others in the Army are only too happy to destroy them. Hunter was instantly attracted to Amelia, and even when he learned that she was a Shape Shifter, he had to know her, spend time with her. And once he did, he knew that she was the one for him, and he'd do anything to protect her from his father.

The Girl: Amelia Brecken has a sweet voice, but she looks completely unlike her voice. She's got tattoos along her arm, and she rides a motorcycle. Amelia felt an instant connection to Hunter when she first met him, but when she learned that he was the General of the Werewolf Army, she was scared. How could she feel something for someone who wants her and her people dead? But she agrees to one date with Hunter, and when she realizes that he is nothing like his father, she decides to give them a chance, no matter how fearful she is. But when it's brought to light that she's the most powerful Shape Shifter ever, things quickly take a turn for the worse.

The villain in CRYING WOLF is, of course, the Commander. He absolutely hates the Shape Shifters and blames them for his wife's death. So he wants them to feel the same pain that he does...by arresting Amelia, the Shape Shifter Princess.

I really didn't like the Commander. He is so set on revenge that when proof is shoved right under his nose that he may be wrong, he completely dismisses it. It also bothered me that he rarely treated Hunter like his son, only as the General. AND he even threatened to execute Hunter if he didn't bring Amelia in. What kind of father does that? I hope he eventually gets what's coming to him.

Hunter and Amelia definitely have a star-crossed lovers romance. Hunter is the General in the Werewolf Army (and his father is the Commander), and Amelia is the Princess of the Shape Shifters, both of whom are at war. Their relationship is dangerous and could cost them their lives. But they love each other so deeply that that doesn't matter. But when Hunter's father orders him to arrest Amelia, he will do anything to protect her, even if that means breaking her heart. He just hopes that she'll always remember "Love. Forgive. Trust."

This was an insta-love romance (which is getting kind of old, but it only really bothers me when the book is Contemporary, so it worked really well in this instance). With their circumstances, Amelia has a really hard time trusting Hunter, especially when he starts keeping things from her. I really loved the necklace that Hunter gave her that had the inscription "Love. Forgive. Trust." He knows about Amelia's insecurities, and with what has to go down, he also knows that he may lose her forever. So I really liked this little reminder to Amelia, that no matter what, he needs her lover, forgiveness, and trust that everything he's doing is to protect her. I'm really looking forward to seeing how thing play out in the next book.

Hunter

Hunter was nervous. He was the son of the Commanding Officer of the Werewolf Army and anything he said, went. Hunter Jackson was quickly working his way up to General, but his task right now was to present a way to bridge the gap between the Werewolves and the Shape Shifters. He was going over his notes looking down at what caused this dumb ass war. He truly believed it was stupid. One little misunderstanding between his dad and the Brecken family, and all hell broke loose.

“Hi.” A female voice said from behind him.

“I’m Amelia.” Her voice was sweet. Way too sweet for Hunter Jackson, but he got the shock of his life when he turned around and saw tattoos up her arm, and hazel, greenish eyes that stunned him. She was a mixture of sweet and badass, Hunter’s perfect fit.

“I’m Hunter.” He said, stretching out his hand. She took it and he felt heat, passion, desire, and the weight he was carrying on his shoulders vanish the moment her hand connected with his.

“Well, I need to head in and find my parents. This should be interesting.” She huffed. He didn’t want her to leave, but he surrendered her.

Yea, interesting was one way to put it. Hunter took his speech seriously when his father gave him the task. He spent every waking moment studying what caused the rift between the Werewolves and the Shape Shifters. What he learned was that it was no one’s fault. It was a horrible misunderstanding regarding control of certain parts of Linwynn. Most of the country was under the control of the Werewolves, but long ago, the Shape Shifters had claimed a small piece of the country. It was legit, but a weird document appeared saying the land was taken from the Werewolves and everything began to spiral out of control. There had already been tension for personal reasons. This just further pressed things. His dad was determined to take down the Shape Shifters and had arrested several that lived in the part of Linwynn controlled by them.

Hunter begged his dad to just leave things alone, but he wasn’t having it. So here Hunter was hoping he could bridge the gap. He thought his idea was pretty solid, but Hunter also knew his dad. In fact, Hunter wondered why his dad had even asked for this.

Stepping up to address the Werewolves and Shape Shifters, his eyes immediately searched for the beautiful Amelia. He didn’t see her in the Werewolf section, though when he did find her, his heart sank. She was sitting right in between Sir Reid and Mistress Lilyann. Oh shit, she was a Brecken; she was a Shape Shifter. Oh fuck! He was royally screwed unless this speech worked, and the shock on her face told him all he needed to know. She was terrified because she now knew he wasn’t just Hunter, he was Hunter Jackson. To a Brecken, that would be a major deal, quite possibly a deal breaker.

3 Sniffs Review: BE GOOD by Dakota Madison

The Bad-Girl and the Boy-Next-Door...

After getting completely wasted at a wedding reception, bridesmaid Anna Hart wakes up in a strange bed and can't remember what she did or who she did it with.

The stranger in bed with Anna is Brett Conner, a nerdy guy who she vaguely remembers from college, but only because everyone called him Clown Hair. Only Brett isn't quite as nerdy as Anna remembers. His clown hair is long gone and Brett is almost cute--and kind of sexy.

Over the course of four weddings, in four cities, in one crazy summer, Brett and Anna start a mismatched relationship. But is there a future for the bad-girl and the boy-next-door?

Anna Hart is a party girl with a reputation for sleeping around. When she wakes up next to Brett Connor after a wedding, hungover, she can't remember how she ended up with him. As Anna gets to know Brett better, she begins to feel things she never felt with any of the other guys she's been with before. Brett promises her that he's not "that guy," but he may not be as good as he seems.

During the course of four weddings, BE GOOD shows us that appearances can be deceiving. Anna is portrayed as a "bad girl" on the outside, but she's really just a misunderstood girl who got trapped in that label of a bad girl. Brett, on the other hand, is portrayed as the "boy next-door" or a good guy, but his actions show that he's not as good as everyone thinks he is.

There were a few parts of the story that I really didn't like, one namely being how Anna constantly puts herself down. She even has a list of 126 flaws, that she's always repeating, and I really just wanted her to find something or someone who made her feel better about herself. I also didn't really like how Brett was always saying that he loved Anna, but at times it sounded really insincere and his actions at points in the story prove that he's not completely true to himself, much less Anna, about how he feels. I did, however, really like the appearances can be deceiving lesson, and Anna's transformation by the end of the book.

The Guy: Brett Connor was known as "clown hair" in college and was a math tutor. Now he's tamed his hair and works for NASA. He's only had one serious relationship before he's with Anna. He insists that he's not like all the other guys that Anna's been with, but that isn't necessarily true.

In the beginning of BE GOOD, I really liked Brett. He was sweet and he took care of Anna when she was sick. But by the end, especially after what he did to Anna, I just really wanted to pop him one. He was a complete jerk and was kind of a spineless coward. Anna is way more forgiving than I would have been if he had done that to me.

The Girl: Anna Hart has been told all her life the negative things about herself and very rarely anything positive that didn't have to do with how she looked. She has a list of 126 flaws that seem to haunt her wherever she goes. The way Brett treated her with respect boosted her self-worth and her heart starts opening to feelings she's never had before. Anna is a girl seen for her looks, so when Brett looked beyond her face to what may be inside, she quickly fell in love with him.

This girl. I just really loved her. She is so misunderstood and has so much to offer, but people rarely take the time to notice. When Anna was hurt by Brett, I loved how she picked herself up and decided to improve herself. When she finally finds her self-worth, she's not going to let anyone treat her like she's disposable again. So yay for Anna!

It all started with one drunken night after a wedding. Anna wakes up with no memory of the night before, and as Brett takes care of her and they share breakfast, something more begins between them. After they go home, Anna reaches out to Brett via Facebook and they start seeing each other.

Brett and Anna shared things with each other that they never shared with anyone one else before. Brett shared his love for gardens, even taking Anna to a number of them, and reveals the reason behind it. Anna shared her feelings and insecurities about herself as a person, and how no one was really there for her growing up.

That all sounds really nice and perfect, right? Just wait.

Then Sweater Vest starts reconnecting with Brett after seeing him in photos with Anna on Facebook. It was obvious to me that she was jealous that Brett was moving on and her way of driving a wedge between him and Anna. But he didn't see it that way. And the end result was Brett hurting Anna and breaking her heart.

But Anna became a stronger, better version of herself as a result. She started finding herself and what she's really interested in and what makes her happy. Because of Brett's jerky move, Anna found her self-worth. And that is the only reason I don't outright hate him.

Never, ever cry. . . .

Eureka Boudreaux's mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn't, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger, who comes closer to making her cry than anyone has before.

But Ander doesn't know Eureka's darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story, that Ander might be telling the truth . . . and that her life has far darker undercurrents than she ever imagined.

TEARDROP tells the tale of how Atlantis fell and the one girl who can bring it back into reality. But don't go thinking that the return of Atlantis could be a good thing. Far from it. There are those who desperately want to bring Atlantis back, and those who will do anything to prevent it's rising. Caught in the middle is Eureka, a girl who is just trying to make it day-to-day after her mother's death. What Eureka doesn't realize is that there is a very good reason why her mother told her to never, ever cry. The rise of Atlantis, while it sounds good, could actually mean the destruction of the world as she knows it.

At the core of TEARDROP is a love story. And the love, jealousy and heartbreak is what caused the fall of Atlantis. A girl was engaged to marry the king, but then fell in love with his brother, and they ran away together. But they didn't make it away before tragedy struck. And the tears of one girl sunk the entirety of Atlantis to the bottom of the sea.

What's interesting is how this origin story parallels, but then also intersects with the present. I'm not really sure if that makes any sense. It's like one moment the past and present are mirroring each other, and then all of a sudden the past and present clash. It's kind of confusing sometimes because so much happens in TEARDROP. There is a complexity to the story that keeps you engaged, but also makes you go "Huh?".

The story does start out kind of slow and feels drawn out, but it's definitely worth it to tough it out, because the story gets much, much better once Eureka receives her inheritance.

The Guys: Of course, there is a love triangle, so there are two guys to talk about. I'll start with Ander, since he's the first one we meet in the story. In the prologue, we know that Ander has feelings for Eureka and has been, for lack of a better work, stalker her her whole life, but then we find out that he's with the people who want to kill her. Basically, although he loves her, he has to kill her, and that torments him. Then fast-forward to the present, he's still following her around, but he's apparently not with the baddies anymore. But there is always the question of is he just playing her or is he sincere? I'm still not really sure if I like him or not.

Then we have Eureka's best friend Brooks. He's always been there for her and has been her rock in her times of trouble. But then all of a sudden he starts acting totally unlike himself. Being mean and spiteful one moment, then being his usual caring and concerned self. I don't want to give too much away about what happened to him, so I'll just say that after being hit by a huge, unnatural wave something bad has taken him over and Eureka is determined to help him. I don't usually root for the best friend, but I really liked Brooks, so for now, I'm Team Brooks.

The Girl: Eureka is a broken person after losing her mother. She has no real interests anymore, and only has two friends left, but she has kept her promise to her mother. She hasn't cried, not once. What she really doesn't need is the fate of the world on her shoulders, but that's what she got when Ander entered her life claiming her life was in danger. I kind of had a love/hate thing going with Eureka. In the beginning, she's kind of a downer. I can understand being sad that your mother is dead, but there is a point where reading so much depression and sadness becomes exhausting. It wasn't until toward the end, when she starts finding herself again and accepting her new reality, that I really started to like her. She became strong again.

The baddies are actually all Atlantean in origin. There is Ander's family. They are on the side of preventing the rise of Atlantis at any cost. They are actually very horrible, and their thinking is that the only way to prevent the rising is to kill all those that are descended from the woman who first sunk Atlantis, and anyone who gets in their way of accomplishing that. It doesn't matter if they are men, women, or children. There is a particularly graphic death scene that just flies at you out of nowhere. You think that they will just do some threatening and posturing, but then BAM, nope. It's very cringe-worthy.

The other side of the coin is the King of Atlantis. He wants Atlantis to rise at any cost. Any cost. Not much is known about him yet, but he is very real, and he is out for blood.

As I mentioned before, there are love triangles in TEARDROP. That's not really a surprise since Lauren Kate is famous for her love triangles. But I should probably mention that there is not one, but two love triangles in this book. There is the epic story that's the origin of it all, between the King of Atlantis, his brother, and the girl they both want. Then there is the one that could bring about the destruction of our world, between Ander, Brooks, and Eureka. The interesting thing is that Eureka's situation mirrors the original tale, and not just how you would think. It's about who they are and how they relate to the first triangle. I'm really looking forward to seeing more about how they are all connected.

I have to say that I think Ander got more of a chance with Eureka in TEARDROP than Brooks. Brooks just ran out of time too quickly to get the chance to really even tell Eureka how he feels about her, much less anything else. So I would really like to see more between Eureka and Brooks. I mean, Ander is okay, even with his stalker tendencies, but at this point I really want to see Brooks win the girl.

It should be pretty obvious that most of the action in TEARDROP takes place either in or on the water. The opening scene in the prologue starts everything off. Ander and his family are preparing a huge wave to crash into Eureka's mother's car to kill them. Then there are a bunch of unnatural waves happening where they never have before, and storms and flooding like they've never seen. The one scene toward the end of the book, takes place almost completely underwater, thanks to Eureka's Thunderstone. But that end scene is really freaky for me because I can't swim, so just the thought of being stuck underwater, even with a Thunderstone, freaks me out. The entire book is definitely a very watery adventure. I'm really looking forward to seeing where it takes us.
