Jade Mathews has been abused physically, sexually, mentally, and emotionally since she was a child. As she grew older, she fell in with drug users and dealers, and became addicted to meth. But then one day she decided that she's had enough. She leaves her abusive "boyfriend" and takes a bus to a small town named Red Blossom. There she meets Kyler James, a reclusive writer. His kindness seems to good to be true. He gives her a place to live and a job as his assistant, never expecting anything from her but her help and company. But when Jade takes a peek at his current manuscript, she wonders if she's trusted the wrong person once again.

BREAK FREE is a really emotional book about rising above the pain of an abusive life and searching out a place where you can thrive and be able to say that you weren't beaten down and that you're better than your abuser. Jade showed great strength in being able to leave that abusive atmosphere, not to mention the drugs that she was so addicted to. I loved seeing her become more of her true self as she started getting off the drugs that she was on and find something that she could do with her life, not to mention finding someone who could truly love her and not abuse her.

I honestly don't know if BREAK FREE is the first book in a series or not. At the end of this book it said something about looking forward to a book called Break Through. If this is the next book in a possible series, that would be really cool. I don't know if it would continue with Jade and Kyler, or go to other characters, but I would really like to read Kyler's story. He seems to have some things in his past that he needs to work out and "break free" from.

Kyler: He is a writer, who wrote a book called The Yellow String. When he finds Jade in his barn, he offers her food, a place to live, and a job as his assistant. He tries to build up Jade's confidence and self-esteem. He cares more for people, and his dog, Edgar, than he does for material things. He is a man who doesn't like technology and sees things as just that, things. But he does seem to know more about Jade than he should for a stranger. But is he really a stranger to her?

Jade: She has been abused in so many was since she was a child. She was terribly scarred in a fire set by her own father, on purpose. Now her confidence and self-esteem are really low, she's addicted to meth, and just feels like she has nowhere to go but down. But the one day, she decides that she's had enough, and leaves everything behind. She gets a bus ticket and goes to the small town of Red Blossom. There she meets writer Kyler James, and her life is changed in a big way. A good way.

The villain(s) of BREAK FREE are Jades terrible and disgusted excuse of a father, and her ex-boyfriend Heath. Heath was just like her father in the sense that he would beat her, but he also kept her addicted to meth. Her father is the true villain of this story, though. He is where it all began. He abused her in every way possible, and he even set his own daughter on fire, leaving her face terribly scarred on one side. He is obsessed with Jade in a very disturbing way...

The romance between Jade and Kyler is so sweet. He is unlike anyone that Jade has known. He's caring, thoughtful, considerate. He wants to protect her, not hurt her. As each one of his kindnesses crack a wall around Jades heart, she falls further and further for him. But their relationship does hit a snag when she takes a peek at his manuscript and it ends up being to similar to her own life. 

You really just need to read BREAK FREE to get the full scope of their relationship and Jade's whole recovery process. You won't be disappointed.

Kyler’s eyes softened around the edges. “Jade, your scars only make you more beautiful.”

“Oh, please.” I snorted. “This is not a scene from one of your books.” I pushed away from the counter and turned my back on Kyler. “My scars don’t make me beautiful. They make me hideous.”

“Don’t say that. Don’t ever say that again.” His voice was firm.

I grabbed at the fabric of my pants, rolling it between my fingers. I understood now. Kyler was no different from the others. Sure, his intentions may have been nobler, but he wanted what they all wanted. To control me. To make me obey.

I was steel. I was brick. I was iron. I wouldn’t crumble. “Or you’ll what?” My tone was low and deep, icy. “What will you do if I say it again?”

“I’ll convince you that you’re wrong.”

“And how will you do that?” He’ll hit me, kick me, punch me, burn me, cut me, starve me.

“I’ll tell you that you’re beautiful again and again.”

The words crashed into me like a powerful wave. “What?”

“I’ll say it over and over, as many times as you need, until you believe me.”

I was glass. I was ice. I was fragile. I was breaking. I was his.
